The city takes its name from King Kuru, a Pandava and Kaurava ancestor. Its significance stems from the fact that it is thought to be the site of the Mahabharata's epic Kurukshetra War. On the eve of the epic war, Lord Krishna preached the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna on this land, which dates back to 2800 BC.
