Founded in 1430 AD, the Likir Monastery is located on the bank of the Lidder River, in the northern Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. Though mostly in ruins today, the Likir Monastery is well-worth visiting. It is a beautiful example of Ladakhi architecture that blends Tibetan and Kashmiri styles. The Likir Monastery is notable as home to the 17th Karmapa, head of the Karma Kagyu sect of Tibetan Buddhism, and as the place where the monk Tsongkhapa founded his Gelukpa school.
