The Bhimbetka rock shelters, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are an archaeological site showing the earliest signs of human life on the Indian subcontinent and the start of the South Asian Stone Age. Although the Bhimbetka was found in 1957, it wasn't until the 1970s that its actual scope and significance were discovered. There are 500 or so caves at the site with about 30,000-year-old rock paintings in them. The colors employed in these paintings are drawn from natural and vegetable sources, and some of the geometric designs found here are believed to be from the medieval era.
