The town of Sanchi in Madhya Pradesh is associated with Buddhist Stupas which are hemispherical structures that typically house relics of the Buddha or his followers. Emperor Ashoka commissioned the construction of the Sanchi Stupas in order to preserve and promote the Buddhist philosophy. The monuments and sculptures in this town serve as a fine illustration of how Buddhist art and architecture evolved in Madhya Pradesh. These monuments were built all the way back in the third century BC until the 12th century AD.
